A recent report by the Secretary-General of the United Nations highlights the growing international recognition of the cooperative enterprise as an essential driver of sustainable development, job creation and social inclusion. The document places Spain as one of the main benchmarks in this global drive.

Spain, an international leader in the social economy

Among the key milestones highlighted by the UN is the adoption of the Comprehensive Law to Promote the Social Economy in Spain, designed to consolidate governance, strengthen the rights of the sector and combat bogus cooperatives. The multilateral body also values the impact of the Strategic Project for the Social and Care Economy, which has mobilised more than 2.5 billion euros and involved more than 4,400 Spanish organisations.

In the field of national accounting, Spain is leading the way by publishing its first official Satellite Account, recording 22,363 cooperatives, with output of 120.701 billion euros and 5.8% of national employment.

In the international sphere, the report highlights the creation, together with Brazil and Colombia, of the Group of Friends of the Social Economy. The platform offers a space for governments to exchange good practices and public policies.
