These are the conclusions of the World Cooperative Monitor 2025
In the health sector, the World Cooperative Monitor provides relevant insights into impact, competitiveness and international reach.
The 13th edition of the World Cooperative Monitor (WCM 2025), published by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) along with the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises (EURICSE), offers an exhaustive panorama regarding the economic and social impact of the largest cooperatives in the world. This annual report, presented within the framework of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025 and the UN’s World Social Summit in Doha, emphasises the contribution of cooperatives to sustainable, inclusive and resilient economies on a global scale. These are three key conclusions from the report regarding healthcare cooperatives.
1. The health sector is beginning to appear in the global top 300
Although the education, health and social work sector represents a smaller portion of the total in the top 300 - with 10 organisations classified in this group, its presence indicates the capacity of the cooperative model for organising care and social care services in many countries.
2. Unimed is scaling positions in cooperativism
When the ranking is analysed by turnover over per capita GDP, the Unimed System (Brazil) holds the fourth position, with a value of over 1.89 million dollars per equivalent inhabitant, exceeding many traditional cooperatives. This underscores the relative economic impact of the cooperative healthcare model in developing countries.
3. The WCM is showing competitiveness on a global scale
The WCM highlights the cooperative values – solidarity, democratic participation and social responsibility, as fundamental assets against global challenges, from the preparation for pandemics to the promotion of healthy lifestyles. The growing international visibility is opening the door to potentiating new models for funding, governing and provision of health services centred on the people.
