Although, in most cases, yellow teeth do not entail actual risk or are a sign of an underlying condition, the appearance of yellow stains can affect self-esteem and confidence. This is particularly true when what we see does not match the idealised image of sparkling white teeth that prevails in society. But what causes this discolouration

There are many factors, two of which are of natural origin: age and genes. As we get older, our teeth are inevitably worn down, and this affects some people more than others because of their DNA. However, we can be proactive in caring for our dental health and take steps to slow enamel decay or even entirely avoid it.

How to prevent the onset of yellow teeth

Good oral hygiene and healthy habits can help prevent the discolouration of our teeth. Here are some preventive measures:

  • Clean your teeth properly: It is essential to brush your teeth at least twice a day, and ideally, after every meal. It is recommended to use a toothpaste with fluoride and to complement brushing with dental flossing to remove food debris that may have become trapped between teeth.
  • Choose your toothbrush carefully: The choice of toothbrush is crucial. Opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid overaggressive brushing that can damage the enamel and be counterproductive. For more effective cleaning, use of an electric toothbrush is recommended, as is changing the brush head when it is worn. A simple way to know when it is time to replace it is to check if the colour of the bristles has changed.
  • Beware of certain beverages and foods: The pigments in certain foods and drinks can alter the colour of our teeth. It is therefore advisable to avoid excessive consumption of black tea, coffee, red wine, vinegar and soy sauce, among others.
  • Say goodbye to tobacco: It is well known that tobacco causes stains on teeth, as nicotine and tar adhere to the dental surface, causing discolouration. It is therefore advisable to avoid tobacco, not only because of its aesthetic impact, but also because of the numerous health risks it entails.
  • Visit your dentist regularly: It is essential to regularly monitor the health of your teeth, as the dentist will be able to assess their condition and help you prevent the appearance of stains and cavities. It is recommended that you have your teeth cleaned at least once a year to remove plaque and tartar, which not only prevents discolouration but also diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

How to solve yellow teeth

Contrary to what many people think, tooth enamel wear is not an irreversible problem. Nowadays, there are several options for whitening teeth to recover a sparkling smile. Here are the two most popular ones:

  • Whitening: There are several techniques and procedures for whitening teeth, but external cleaning is still the most common. This technique is performed by applying a gel containing hydrogen peroxide, which whitens teeth by reacting with a laser lamp or a cold light or LED. It is a tooth-friendly treatment with visible results from day one.
  • Veneers: Veneers are thin shells, usually made of porcelain, that are bonded to the front of teeth to improve their appearance. This minimally invasive and highly effective treatment can immediately improve the appearance of any smile. In addition to correcting the colour and shape of teeth, it is also a solution to conceal crooked or chipped teeth.

In conclusion, although yellow teeth may affect our self-esteem, it is important to remember that it is not an irreversible problem. With good oral hygiene, healthy habits and the use of appropriate treatments, it is possible to prevent and correct discoloured teeth. Don't hesitate to consult your dentist to find the option that best suits your needs in order to maintain a smile that stays radiant.
